Myki users escaping fines

Not a single passenger carrying a full-fare myki card on Melbourne’s public transport system has been fined for travelling on an unvalidated ticket.

Looks like they’re implementing the “free public transport” idea after all.

Seriously, I knew this was going on for quite some time - the mobile Myki-checkers simply don’t work, so the ticket checking people have just dropped them. When Myki first came in on trams, they would try to check my ticket, but get all confused and frustrated. Eventually, they stopped trying. All I have to do now is show them my Myki, and they say “thanks”.

I doubt it’s even technically possible to check a Myki from a mobile device right now.

Bonus: Jurgen’s super-duper plan to fix Myki

1. Throw it out. Get rid of it completely.

2. Fund a state-wide competition amongst university students to design a cheap, modern, traceable ticketing system.

3. Implement that.

4. Allow the winners to market their system to whoever wants it.
