Water water everywhere

Victorians are being urged to prepare for the state’s worst rainfall event since 1998, with forecasters saying the northern and central parts of the state can expect a day of torrential rain on Saturday.

I drove up to Shepparton and back today for work (and stopped at a winery on the way back - couldn’t resist). I was struck by the amount of water everywhere. Rivers are flowing, dams are full, lakes are full, the grass is lush and green. Even water levels in Melbourne’s reservoirs are higher than they’ve been in years. We’ve been very lucky lately with water lately.

I’m wondering if it’s part of a natural cycle: the intense heat and resulting fires last year cleared a lot of bushland, and now we get lots of rain to get things growing again. When everyone was talking about the drought, there was some talk of a 10-year drought-and-flood cycle. It makes more sense than being totally random.
