Why I use a Mac
This morning, Windows 7\. Task: Printing a PDF attached to an email. Acrobat (sorry, “Adobe Reader” bah) wouldn’t open, so I restart. Now it opens, but won’t print because it says I need to install a printer. I look in “Devices and Printers” and see all my printers are there. I open the one I want to print to, and it tells me “Printer needs a new driver”. Well, that’s nice. How do I install one? Clicking on “Printer needs a new driver” opens up the print queue. No, I don’t want that. Ah, under the “Printer” menu is “Update driver”. Select that. Do I want to let Windows do this? Yes. Nothing happens. Try again. Nothing. Restart again. Now Acrobat (err.. Reader) tells me I have an update, do I want to install? Sure. Wait. Read nonsense like “File: Copying new files: Bytes”. Installer tells me I have to restart again. Okay fine. Still nothing. Walk over to Helpdesk. They’re puzzled, someone comes over and runs a registry hack called “Printfix”, because sometimes the ports disappear. What?! Okay, so restart again. Still can’t print, same errors. This time, though, the printer driver actually seems to install, and the “Printer needs a new driver” is replaced with “0 Document(s) in queue”. And now, finally, Acrobat can print.
Walk to the printer. Get the paper just printed from Windows (and the one I printed 15 minutes ago from my Mac when Windows started behaving like a dick).
