Melbourne's planning to-do list
Let’s set up a long-term planning mechanism. Planning is too important to be left to governments, which are often in thrall to the developers that helped get them elected. Over the next 50 years we’re likely to get at least half a dozen changes of government, each abandoning the planning vision of its predecessor. We need a body that plots and plans, after due consultation, free of political considerations. Maybe we need to return to the old days of the Board of Works, but expand it.

A very nice list of things that Melbourne ought to get done sooner rather than later. One staggering statistic from the article: Greater Melbourne has 172 level crossings. Sydney has eight. Woah.
